We last left Alice just as she was preparing to follow the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole. Let us pause as we ponder the next sentence and its implications. Especially as we think about New Year’s resolutions in this, Year Two, of Our International Pandemic.
Follow the Leader?
In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.
Sound like any recent wars we’ve been in? Any crazy cures (drink that bleach?) How about you at work? How often have you plunged ahead, never considering the consequences? Are there times when you should? Do we need to get to Wonderland in order to solve the problem? Have we really defined the problem? Is the Rabbit Hole the only way to a solution?
On the whole, when presented with a problem or a crisis (now pretty much an everyday occurrence) it’s generally wiser to take a breath, generally better to wait and see whether the person (or rabbit) we’re following is headed. It may be that we want to follow. Or it may be that we should, for the moment, wait and watch and consider and perhaps ponder: Is this the path to a Wonderland we want? Or is this the way to a fad solution that may put us scurrying around, with our only planning aimed, like Alice’s, at trying to find a good exit strategy.
